Saying Thank You

Students at the IU School of Medicine-Northwest have an unusual relationship with the cadavers they study in gross anatomy lab. They know names and some personal history about each cadaver, and at the end of the semester, they honor these donors with a "Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving," inviting donors' family and friends to attend. Theology professor Fred Niedner was a guest at the event earlier this year and shares his reflections in an editorial he penned for the Gary Post-Tribune. Pictured here is medical student Janushi Dalal holding a U.S. flag provided by the Illinois National Guard and presented by the IU Northwest ROTC and Army Cadets in memory of veteran and body donor Philip A. Countryman, M.D. `85.
